Gathering Around A ‘Common Table’ – A New Kind of Restaurant

August 6, 2010

This week’s story about good neighbors is about a new kind of restaurant opening up in Bend, OR, later this month, called Common Table. It’s a very interesting non-profit concept, and it will be fascinating to see if it works. If it can, the possibilities for duplicating the idea elsewhere and impacting communities for good all over the country are exciting. The restaurant is based on the concept of social entrepreneurship, in other words, using entrepreneurial principles to enact social good. At Common Table customers will be asked to pay the full suggested menu price. Any profits will be used to feed poor and homeless people in Bend.

But that’s only one aspect of Common Table, other aspects include supporting local farmers who grow organically or use sustainable farming methods, job training, and providing a community gathering spot in the evenings. The restaurant will serve breakfast and lunch, becoming a sort of town hall for citizens at night. You can read all about it on the website.

As Common Table’s motto says: Eat good. Do good. Make good happen. Not a bad motto for all of us.
